What is the best software for fitness and personal trainers?

7 min read1,575 wordsChecked 22 September 2026

Fitness coaching inverts the usual relationship between the session and the work. The session is a check-in; the training is the product, and it happens four to six times a week without you.

That makes the client-facing app the primary surface rather than a convenience, and it makes programming — sets, progressions, substitutions — a first-class requirement rather than a document you email.

The criterion here is therefore narrower than in general health coaching: programming, tracking and an app built for physical training specifically.

The short answer

Ranked by programming, tracking and a client app built for physical training, Coachful is first from $29 a month and we make it, with HubFit at $29 genuinely stronger on fitness-specific programming. Fitness coaching is the niche where the client app is the product, because the work happens in a gym rather than a session.

Every tool, in detail

1

Coachful

Coachful covers programme structure, habits, check-ins and a client app alongside packages, payments and cohorts, which matters because group programmes are how fitness coaching economics improve.

On programming specifically, HubFit understands sets, loads and progression more deeply than we do and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

Best for

Fitness coaches running programmes and cohorts who need the business side as well.

Where it falls down

HubFit programmes training more deeply than we do.

2

HubFit

HubFit is built around fitness programming and is the strongest product here for it: structured sessions, progression and adherence tracking designed for training rather than adapted to it.

Its commerce and content layers are narrower, so the business half of a fitness practice — packages, instalments, community, a website — is thinner than the broader products here.

Best for

Fitness and nutrition coaches whose main problem is structured programming.

Where it falls down

Narrower commerce and content layers for the business half of the practice.

3

CoachAccountable

CoachAccountable tracks actions and metrics over time, which covers adherence in a general way and is excellent at it.

It does not understand training structure — sets, loads, progression — so the programme itself lives elsewhere, and its client surface is a portal rather than a mobile app.

Best for

Coaches tracking adherence generically rather than programming training.

Where it falls down

No training structure, and a portal rather than a phone-first app.

4

Delenta

Delenta covers scheduling, video and programme structure at $19, which is a lot of a training practice for very little money.

Habit and adherence tracking is partial and there is no training-specific programming, so sets, loads and progression live elsewhere.

Best for

Where it falls down

Partial tracking and no training-specific programming.

5

Mighty Networks

Mighty Networks is strong for group-led training: cohorts bound to a community, with a mobile app participants actually open.

No programming, no tracking and no scheduling, so the individual training half of the practice is entirely outside it.

6

Paperbell

Paperbell handles the commercial side of a training practice cleanly: sell the twelve-week programme, take payment, sign the contract.

No programming, no tracking and no client app, which against a criterion built on all three is the whole gap.

Best for

Where it falls down

None of the three things this criterion measures.

What fitness-specific programming actually requires

Structured sessions with progression. Not a PDF. Sets, reps, loads and a progression rule that changes week to week without you rewriting it.

Logging in the moment. A client records a lift between sets on their phone, which means the interface has to work in a gym with one hand and poor signal.

Substitutions. Equipment is unavailable, something hurts, the gym is busy. A programme that cannot be adjusted mid-session gets abandoned mid-session.

Adherence visible to the coach. Which sessions happened, which were skipped, what the loads actually were. This is the data the weekly check-in is built on.

General coaching tools supply the fourth and rarely the first three, which is the whole reason a fitness-specific product exists.

The session is a check-in. The training is the product, and it happens four to six times a week on a phone in a gym.

Where a general tool stops being adequate

A general coaching platform tracks whether something was completed. Fitness programming needs to know what was completed, at what load, and what that means for next week.

That difference shows up in three places. Progression — a programme that adjusts automatically rather than being rewritten weekly by the coach. Substitution — the equipment is busy, something hurts, and the session has to adapt in the moment or it gets abandoned.

Load history — what they actually lifted, which is the data the whole programme depends on.

None of those is a nice-to-have in a training practice. A coach without them is maintaining the programme in a spreadsheet and the tool is doing administration only.

What a training client should be able to do on their phone

  • Open today’s session and see exactly what to do
  • Log a set between sets, with one hand, on poor signal
  • Swap an exercise when the equipment is unavailable
  • See last week’s numbers for the same movement
  • Message the coach about something that hurt, in the same place

Testing a product against real training programming

Build one real week in a trial, not the sample programme.

  1. Enter a session with sets, reps and loads

If you are typing it into a free-text note, the product is tracking completion rather than training, and the programme will end up in a spreadsheet.

  2. Set a progression rule and advance a week

Does next week adjust, or do you rewrite it? This is the difference between programming software and a checklist.

  3. Swap an exercise as the client, mid-session

The equipment is busy and something hurts. A programme that cannot adapt in the moment gets abandoned in the moment.

  4. Log a set on a phone, one-handed

In a gym, on poor signal. This is where the product is actually used and almost nobody tests it there.

  5. Look at the coach view after a week

Which sessions happened, which were skipped, what the loads were. That is the data the check-in is built on.

Common questions

What is the best software for fitness coaches?

Against programming, tracking and a training-specific app, Coachful from $29 a month and we make it, with HubFit at $29 genuinely stronger on fitness-specific programming.

Can I use a general coaching platform for fitness?

For the business side, yes. For programming, most general tools track completion without understanding sets, loads or progression, which means the actual programme lives in a spreadsheet or a PDF.

Why does the client app matter so much here?

Because the work happens four to six times a week in a gym, not in the session. If the client cannot log a lift between sets on their phone, adherence data is reconstructed from memory at the weekly check-in.

Should fitness coaches run group programmes?

The economics strongly favour it. A twelve-week programme with a cohort converts the same delivery hours into several times the revenue, and adherence genuinely improves with a group.

How do I compete with free training programmes?

Not on the programme itself. On adjustment, accountability and knowing what to change when something is not working — which is exactly what the tracking data makes possible.

Do fitness coaches need specialist software?

For programming, usually. General coaching tools track completion without understanding sets, loads or progression, which means the programme itself ends up in a spreadsheet and the tool handles only the admin.

How do fitness coaches increase income?

Group programmes, almost always. A twelve-week cohort converts the same delivery hours into several times the revenue, and adherence improves because the group provides accountability the coach cannot.

What does fitness programming need that general coaching software lacks?

Sets, loads and progression that advance on a rule rather than being rewritten weekly, substitutions that work mid-session, and logging that functions one-handed in a gym. General tools track completion and none of the four.

The verdict

HubFit is better than us at fitness-specific programming and costs the same. For a coach whose entire practice is structured physical training, that specificity is worth more than breadth.

Coachful wins the broader criterion because fitness coaching is also a business — packages, payments, cohorts, retention — and HubFit is narrower there. If programming is 80% of your problem, buy the specialist. If it is half, the trade looks different.

How to disagree with this

The criterion is the whole argument. If breadth is not what you need, this order is irrelevant to you and a different list will serve you better. That is why there are several, each ordered by something different.

For a version of the same products with no ordering at all, the alphabetical directory lists every one of them and picks nothing.
